"A MOTHER'S LOVE IS A BLESSING"

This post is a little out of the ordinary for this blog but , on this Mothering Sunday, I wanted to post something especially for mothers. This lovely Irish song, sung by the equally lovely Bridie Gallagher, really says it all - "A MOTHER'S LOVE IS A BLESSING". To all mothers, thank you and a very Happy Mothering Sunday.

  1. This is very lovely. Is Mothering Sunday a special holiday in Wales? Perhaps it's like our Mother's Day which we celebrate in May. Thanks for sharing this. Hope all is well with you.

  3. I know this one off by heart. Mom had a record of it, and used to play it when we were young. I am going to go and look for another favourite of hers now, I am in a real nostalgic mood! Thanks for the memory.

  5. Hello Sr Ann Marie

It is lovely to hear from you. I appreciate your interest and support. Here is a little history of the British 'Mothering Sunday'. Hope you enjoy it.

Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent (Laetare Sunday). Until recent years, it was always known as 'Mothering Sunday', but today it is just as often called 'Mother's Day'. However, it has no connection with the American celebration of that name. Centuries ago it was considered important for people to return to their home or 'mother' church once a year. So each year in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their 'mother' church - the main church or Cathedral of the area. It is thought that it was the return to the 'Mother' church which led to the tradition of children, particularly those working as domestic servants, or as apprentices, being given the day off to visit their mother and family.

I hope that explains things a bit. God bless you Sister.

  6. Hi Victor
I think she has a lovely voice too. In her day she was very, very popular. That would have been in the 1950s & perhaps, the early 1960s.

Thanks for your visit and God bless you.

  7. Hi shadowlands
Yes, I cut my teeth on that one too! Isn't it amazing how music can melt the years away and transport us back to other times and places. Like you, those old songs put me into nostalgic mode too. Take care & God bless you, my friend.

  10. Hi Esther G
Thanks for looking in. It is great to hear from you! It is a lovely song, isn't it? And a Mother's love really is a blessing. Sometimes we take that 'blessing' for granted so, even though card manufacturers make a bundle out of Mothering Sunday and Mothers Day, it is good to have such days to show our Mothers just how much we appreciate them. God bless you, Esther G.
